She Weave Checked Me
Thursday, 30 August 2012
A few days ago me and my girls went out to the club. Whilst I was in the queue to pay for entry I felt some poking in the back of my head, so I turned around to see what was behind me. Would you believe I turned around to see some girl say to me 'O I was just checking for tracks', I simply told her my hair is all mine, then she replies 'O it's very nice and full', I said hmm thanks.
I must admit, as sad as it is to say, I am used to stares or funny looks from other females (black females with lengthy hair is very much a rarity in the UK), but never in my life have I experienced a person actually invade my personal space just to know the details of my hair!
I have no idea how to act? I am certainly happy that my hair was mistaken for a weave (I think), but this just confirms that black females are still under the impression we cannot grow long locks *SCREAMS*
I just want to shake them and educate them and point them in the direction of my favourite hair blogs lol
I'm curious to hear if any of you ladies have been weave checked before? How do you deal with it?

It has definitely happened to me before. Not necessarily for the length but more so the thickness and health of my hair. Like you I do want to scream and give them a run down on healthy hair care. That takes too long, so instead I say 'you can have it to!' I never know whether to take it as a compliment or not *shrug*

I can see why your hair is beautiful. I love that response, I will definitely be saving that, if I am to be weave checked again lol.
DeleteOh wow! Lol I haven't had someone perform a weave check on me yet (probably because my hair isn't that long) but I definitely agree with you, not many people in the UK have long hair & its a sad fact. I have many friends who think its absolutely ridiculous that I'm trying to grow my hair long & its gotten to the point where I barley talk about it to them just to avoid the eye rolls lol.
ReplyDeleteI do think the fact that she was poking through you hair was be bit rude and brave of her lol but you should definitely take it as compliment ... you have beautiful hair!

OMG! I definitely feel you there, my mom once used to be like 'why you doing all that to your hair' blah blah blah, but now she's using my coconut oil and copying some other of my hair practices.
DeleteYour friends will be asking you for hair advice very soon!
She was very brave! I cannot imagine going up to a stranger and touching their hair! so weird.
I'd be giving her a lesson on not touching folks all random and invading their space like that. Geez that's so ballsy of people. They never think that the owner of hair they're tugging or poking on might be crazy enough to slap them or yell at them for it. And they really wouldn't be wrong. Plus she had the nerve to say she was checking for tracks? SMH
ReplyDeletehaha! 'They never think that the owner of hair they're tugging or poking on might be crazy enough to slap them or yell at them for it.' That made me laugh, but it's so true!!
DeleteThe way she come out with it, was like it's normal behaviour to be checking some strangers hair, I was very confused.
I had a woman rubbbbbb her hands through my whole hair in the name of patting down fly away pieces.I was so shocked I couldn't utter a word.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's just rude, I hope she didn't mess up your hair style.
DeleteWhat's wrong with just asking nowadays? Why do ladies feel the need to touch??
Unexpected and unwanted touches creep me ouuuut so I flinched and cringed when I read when I read she was poking around in your hair! I just don't know what I'd do in that situation! How does one even rationalize it's okay to go around poking around in strangers hair without permission?! I've had people touch my hair but they've at least asked to do so first.
ReplyDeleteI just answer what ever question they ask me and scurry away as fast as I can lol
LOOL you ever been in a situation where your like 'I can't believe that's just happened'. That was exactly how I was feeling, and because I have never experienced this before I had no idea how to act!
DeleteI've never been weave checked. But if anyone had been going through my hair, I assure you I'd check them LOL xx
ReplyDeleteShe definitely needed to be checked!
DeleteWould of loved to hear her response if I was wearing weave ;o
You are soo right I have been weave checked so many times and it's really annoying, not to talk about hair journey, they don't want to know. Here in the UK I've not come across bsl or mbl,
ReplyDeleteWow! I've only been weave checked once, but its more than likely it will happen again.
DeleteMaybe next time I'll give them a little lecture? haha
